Asset types are designated as either On-Network or Off-Network. On-Network assets can be points or lines and can only be located on the network centerline. Off-Network assets do not have a network location; rather, they have their own independent shapes. The geometry of these Off-Network assets can be points, lines, or polygons. Off-Network assets may also be located against the network depending on their setup in the Asset Metamodel.

Asset Types may also be defined as using XSP or cross-sectional positions. XSPs are a way to designate a location that is laterally offset from the centerline. The asset geometry is derived from the linear referencing system centerline as it is for other on-network asset types, but may be displayed with an offset.
