To add a web opening

To add a web opening within a steel beam, use the following procedure.

Web openings, or openings, can be modeled in gravity steel I-Section beams. This information is utilized by RAM Steel Beam when designing gravity beams.

  1. Either:

select Layout > Beams > Web Openings > Add

    or

select the Add Openings tool from the Layout Beam dynamic toolbar

The Web Opening Layout Mode dialog opens.
  2. Specify the distance from the selected beam span end to the location of the center of the web opening.

The diagram on the dialog is updated as you make changes to represent the current selections.

  3. Indicate whether the web opening should be Centered in the web of the beam, or Offset from the Top of the Beam.

If Offset, specify a distance from the top of the beam and indicate whether the distance is to the Top of Opening, Center of Opening or Bottom of Opening.

  4. Specify the Shape of the opening as either Rectangular or Circular, and indicate the corresponding dimensions.
  5. Either:

click Single to add an opening to a single beam

    or

click Intersect to add openings to a series of beams which intersects a line

  6. Depending on the tool you selected in Step 5, either:
    Option Description
For Single click on a beam and then click the end from which the horizontal distance is measured
For Intersect click two points to draw a line that crosses one or more adjacent beams
Either a rectangular or circular symbol will be drawn to indicate the location and shape of the web opening. The symbol is not drawn to scale.
  7. To add more web openings, right-click and then repeat steps 2 through 6.
